Mandate

The New Brunswick Human Rights Commission is the government agency responsible for the administration of the Human Rights Act. The mandate of the Commission as described in the Act is:

  • To forward the principle that every person is free and equal with dignity and respect;
  • To promote an understanding of, acceptance of, and compliance with the Act; and
  • To develop and conduct educational programs designed to eliminate discriminatory practices.
  • To administer the mechanism for complaint intake and resolution.

Mission

To advance equality and eliminate discriminatory practices and attitudes by enforcing the Human Rights Act and by educating people about their human rights and responsibilities.
 

 

Strategic Goals and Actions

Key Result Area #1: Efficient and Effective Complaint Process

Goal #1.1: To ensure the complaint process is transparent, accessible and results in a timely and fair resolution of human rights complaints.

    Action:
    1.1.1 Ensure the continuous improvement of the complaint process based on emerging jurisprudence and leading practices.
    1.1.2 Conduct a process mapping exercise of the complaint process.
    1.1.3 Ensure the complaint process is equal to both linguistic groups.

Key Result Area #2: Credible and Influential Human Rights Voice

Goal #2.1: To develop an effective human rights strategy with key stakeholders.

    Action:
    2.1.1 Develop and implement a stakeholder strategy that identifies key stakeholders, and determines how the partnership can be developed.

Goal #2.2: To publicly recognize human rights achievements and contributions in New Brunswick.

    Action:
    2.2.1 Continue to confer the Human Rights Award.
    2.2.2 Host the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the NB Human Rights Commission.

Goal #2.3: To develop and implement an effective education strategy.

    Action:
    2.3.1 Conduct an environmental scan of current education programs across Canada.
    2.3.2 Adopt standardized communication and information material and practices.
    2.3.3 Establish key performance targets and indicators for educational activities.

Goal #2.4: To devise and implement an external funding strategy.

    Action:
    2.4.1 Identify and secure external sources of funding.
    2.4.2 Explore the possibility of partnering with organizations to secure resources through research grants.

Key Result Area # 3: Sustainability and Organizational Excellence

Goal #3.1: To maintain, develop and attract a highly skilled and experienced team of human rights professionals.

    Actions:
    3.1.1 Develop an onboarding and skills training strategy.

Goal #3.2: To adhere to the principles of formal management, and deploy modern lean management practices.

    Action:
    3.2.1 Provide training opportunities in Waste Walk.
    3.2.2 Promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Goal #3.3: To optimize the use of technology.

    Action:
    3.3.1 Adopt cost-effective Information Communication Technologies (ICT) tools for enhancing service delivery and operations.

Goal #3.4: To establish a culture of wellness and balance in the workplace.

    Action:
    3.4.1 Ensure every employee has a personal wellness objective in their individual performance agreement.
    3.4.2 Value and recognize the engagement and contribution of employees.
