Fredericton Fish & Game Association

ff-ga

The Fredericton Fish & Game Association (FF&GA) was formed in 1924 by local sportsmen to advocate for the traditional sports of hunting and fishing, and was the leading conservation organization in the Fredericton area. At that time, FF&GA was the only voice for local sportsmen, predating all of the many fish and wildlife groups that have since formed to address niche interests.

During its 100 year history, FF&GA last included a number of high-profile members of society (lawyers, doctors, politicians etc.) within its membership. As well as promoting the well-being of traditional outdoor sports, the FF&GA was, and continues to be, involved in various conservation projects such as fish habitat improvement (stream clean-ups, fish population surveys, installing digger logs), wildlife population surveys (assist DNR and UNB with capturing deer fawns for radio collars, participate in Christmas bird surveys) and outdoor education (assist NB Salmon Council with displays of salmon egg development in classrooms, provide fly tying and fishing instruction to the public).

The FF&GA was one of the founding members of the NB Wildlife Federation (NBWF). The NBWF is the provincial branch of the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and is composed of hunting, fishing and conservation groups throughout the province. Coincidentally, the NBWF is also celebration it’s 100th anniversary this year as well. One on the primary roles of the NBWF is to compile and evaluate proposals from member clubs on how to improve various wildlife populations, as well as how to enhance outdoor experiences. These suggestions are formed into formal resolutions that are discussed and voted on by club delegates at the annual meeting of the NBWF. Those resolutions that are supported by a majority of delegates are then submitted to various government departments (Dept. of Natural Resources, Dept. of Environment, or Fisheries and Oceans Canada) for consideration and response. In past years, FF&GA has been instrumental in proposing in the adoption of legislation for the second gun for moose hunting, creating a special hunting season for muzzleloaders and the development of a fisheries liaison committee with the Fish & wildlife Branch within DNR to hold regular meetings to voice concerns and to work cooperatively on fish management plans.

The Fredericton Fish & Game Association has had a long and rich history and will continue to represent local hunters and anglers on into the future.
