Government of New Brunswick

Canadian Heritage Rivers are Canada’s outstanding rivers, nationally recognized and managed through the support and stewardship of local people and provincial, territorial and federal governments. This recognition ensures the long-term conservation of the rivers’ natural, cultural and recreational values for future generations.

N.B.’s heritage rivers consist of the entire length of the St. Croix River and a 55 km portion of the Upper Restigouche River.

To be so designated, a river, or portion thereof, must have natural heritage, cultural heritage or recreational significance.

The Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development (DNRED) is the lead provincial organization. The department works closely with other stakeholders and governments to ensure that the rivers are managed, developed and used consistent with the river’s heritage river management plan. These plans, developed together by all the stakeholders, outline the best methods to improve or maintain the significant values of the river.

Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development (DNRED), under an agreement with the St. Croix International Waterway Commission (SCIWC), manages the recreation facilities along the St. Croix River. DNRED, under an agreement with the Restigouche River Watershed Management Council (RRWMC), manages the recreation facilities along the Restigouche River.

Yes, each river has boat/canoe launching points, picnic sites, and wilderness campsites. Public access is free.
