Trails

The Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development is responsible for the maintenance and associated infrastructure of over 1,100 km of park land on the former railway lines for public recreational use, part of which ties into the Trans Canada Trail, a national recreational trail system. The department is also responsible for the administration and authorization of an additional 6,500 km of motorized and non-motorized recreational trail networks throughout the province on Crown lands.

Rivers

The Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development is a member of Canada’s National River Conservation Program through the Canadian Heritage Rivers System. New Brunswick’s Heritage Rivers consist of the entire length of the St. Croix River, the entire length of the St. John River and a 55 km portion of the Restigouche River. The Heritage River Management Plans outline the best methods to improve or maintain the significant values of the rivers and the long-term conservation of the rivers’ natural, cultural and recreational values for future generations.
