Government of New Brunswick

We’re taking action on climate change

What are we doing to mitigate the effects of climate change? It’s a question that we take extremely seriously and we know you do too.

On Dec. 5, 2018, Premier Blaine Higgs and his provincial government endorsed the 2016 Transitioning to a Low Carbon Economy, New Brunswick’s Climate Change Action Plan. The plan was based upon recommendations made by an all-party committee of the legislative assembly.

The Climate Change Action Plan is a made-in-New Brunswick approach created by environmental leaders, political parties, and industry, that is already showing results.

It calls for a greater emphasis on renewable energy, a broad-based and co-ordinated approach to energy efficiency in homes and businesses, and a phase-out of coal-fired electricity. It also focuses on initiatives related to education, awareness, capacity-building and adaptation planning.   Some actions in the plan have already been completed while many others are well under way.
