The Department of Transportation Infrastructure (DTI) partnered with Forest NB to pilot a winter weight program (WWP) in 2013. The department is pleased to advise that the program will be renewed for the 2022-2023 winter season. The WW program provides forest industry the opportunity for increased weights on predefined roads during frozen road conditions.
ROUTE ADVISORY: In addition to the route list provided on this web site; All routes, prescribed under Part IV of Schedule B of NB regulation 2001-67 are also included in the winter weight program, and will be considered as open or closed in accordance with the Zone in which they occur.
VEHICLE ADVISORY: DTI completed an evaluation of the loading effects of various vehicle configurations in 2015. Two vehicle combinations were selected for the winter premiums; one quadrem trailer combination and one tridem trailer combination. The authorized vehicle configurations may be found under “quick links” in this website
Winter Weight Zones: The province is divided into 4 zones, with similar temperature regimes, which will be monitored for changing weather patterns.The winter weight zones will be considered either open or closed for winter weights, based on established monitoring procedures. From north to south the anticipated Winter Weight Premiums are:
- Zone 1 – 7-week WWP – 2 Jan. to 20 Feb.
- Zone 2 – 3-week WWP – 16 Jan. to 6 Feb.
- Zone 3 – 2-week WWP – 23 Jan. to 6 Feb.
- Zone 4 – WWP potential under review
Please note: Winter Weight Premium is a pilot program for the forest industry only. All vehicles operating under this program must have a valid NCW3 or NCW4 permit.
