Overview
The Department is the regulating body for teacher certification in New Brunswick. The Office of Teacher Certification is responsible for issuing teacher certificates as well as dealing with all related matters in this domain.
Eligibility
The Minister may issue a teacher's certificate or an interim teacher's certificate to a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a person who provides evidence that the person is entitled under the laws of Canada to obtain employment in Canada as a teacher.

Application procedure:
Every teacher employed in public schools in New Brunswick (k-12) is required to hold a valid New Brunswick Teacher Certificate or an Interim Teacher’s Certificate.
The Office of Teacher Certification with the New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is responsible for the following:
• Processing initial Teacher Certificate applications
• Processing applications for increases in teacher classification
• Processing Principal’s Certificate applications
• Providing administrative services for certified teachers
Teacher Certification Statistics for 2018-19
Pursuant to the Education Act and the Teacher Certification Regulation, the Minister of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has the authority to suspend or revoke a teacher’s certificate.
The following is a summary of statistics for 2018-19.
- Total number of Classroom Teachers* 7,169.4
- Total number of Teacher Certificate Suspensions 0
- Total number of Teacher Certificate Revocations 3
*Classroom teachers are defined as regular classroom teachers, French Immersion teachers, second language teachers, trades specialists, music and art specialists, physical education specialists, educational support teachers, principals and vice principals, guidance counsellors, and other classroom teachers.
