Overview
Plumbing inspections are carried out to ensure compliance with the requirements of the National Plumbing Code of Canada (2010).
The National Plumbing Code of Canada contains the minimum health and safety requirements for plumbing installations.
Eligibility
Any person can make a written request to the Chief Plumbing Inspector for a special inspection of a plumbing system.
The holder of a homeowner's plumbing permit is entitled to three plumbing inspections, if necessary.
Owners of buildings with testable backflow prevention devices are responsible for having the devices tested annually.
Description
Any plumbing system that has been installed, extended, altered, renewed or repaired by a plumbing contractor or owner-ocupant may be inspected by an inspector to ensure installation meets minimum safety standards.
Provincial inspections are carried out on an auditing basis according to risk priority. Specific requests for inspections are subject to availability and may be subject to special inspection fees. The cities of Fredericton, Moncton and Saint John carry out their own inspections.
Backflow prevention device tests are conducted on installation or repair of the device and annually thereafter. Results are submitted to the Chief Plumbing Inspector.
Testable backflow prevention devices must be inspected annually by holders of a provincial backflow prevention device tester's licence.
