FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government is now offering reciprocity to Ukrainian settlers with a driver’s licence from that country, making it easier for them to obtain Class 5 passenger vehicle licences in New Brunswick.
“This is good news for all newcomers from Ukraine”, said Public Safety Minister Bill Hogan. “This will definitely help us create a welcoming environment and improve settlement services for newcomers in New Brunswick.”
A Class 5 licence authorizes the holder to:
- Drive any two-axle motor vehicle except an ambulance, taxicab or bus.
- Drive any three-axle motor vehicle, other than a truck, designed for use in the construction, maintenance and repair of highways.
- Tow a registered vehicle (up to 4,500 kg) behind a motor vehicle or motor home not equipped with air brakes.
Applicants must provide the necessary identification and address documents, pay a fee of $90 and test their vision while in the Service New Brunswick office, but they will be exempt from knowledge and road tests.
Some settlers who have started the testing process may need to continue, depending on their results. Drivers with under two years of experience will be subject to graduated driver’s licence rules.
