New information line for seniors01 October 2013
FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government launched a new toll-free information line for seniors today.
The announcement was made on National Seniors Day by Healthy and Inclusive Communities Minister Dorothy Shephard who is also minister responsible for seniors.
“Seniors, their families and caregivers who call 1-855-550-0552 from anywhere in North America will receive information on government services and programs related to seniors,” said Shephard. “This new service will be user-friendly. Questions will be answered in person by trained, bilingual agents.”
The information line fulfils a government commitment and addresses a concern raised in the Premier's Panel on Seniors report, Living Healthy, Aging Well, that older adults and their families do not have proper access to the relevant information they need to access the services available to them.
The need for this type of service was also raised during the citizen engagement sessions on active aging that were hosted by Shephard in June 2013.
The toll-free line provides older adults with a traditional method of speaking one-on-one with qualified staff who will assist them in finding their way through the various government departments and ensure they get to the right service provider for further assistance.
“Transforming aging into a positive experience is part of the provincial government's plan to rebuild New Brunswick,” said Shephard. “I am proud of this new toll-free number because it will help seniors navigate the system easily in order to find the information they need to make informed decisions.”
Calls to 1-855-550-0552 will be answered Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Messages can be left after hours and calls will be returned the following business day.
