FREDERICTON (GNB) Seventeen schools have been selected to be part of a research project to study the impact of an additional hour of play-based learning activities for kindergarten to Grade 2 students.

“Children in kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 have shorter school days than all other grades in New Brunswick. This research project will allow students to participate in an additional hour of play-based learning activities,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brian Kenny. “This research project is being undertaken in partnership with teachers and schools. We will review the results to determine the impact of additional instructional time and additional resources for students.”

Ten schools from the anglophone sector and seven schools from the francophone sector will participate in the project.

Participating schools in the anglophone sector:

  • Meduxnekeag Consolidated School (Woodstock)
  • Chipman Elementary School (Chipman)
  • Glen Falls School (Saint John)
  • St. John the Baptist/King Edward School (Saint John)
  • St. George Elementary School (St. George)
  • Shediac Cape School (Shediac Cape)
  • Riverside Consolidated School (Riverside-Albert)
  • King Street Elementary School (Miramichi)
  • Napan Elementary School (Napan)

Participating schools in the francophone sector:

  • École L’Étincelle (Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël)
  • École L’Escale des Jeunes (Bas-Caraquet)
  • École Mgr-Matthieu-Mazerolle (Rivière-Verte)
  • École Régionale-de-Saint-André (Saint-André)
  • École Mgr-Marcel-François-Richard (Saint-Louis de Kent)
  • École Les Éclaireurs (Fredericton)
  • École Soleil Levant (Richibucto)

Independent experts will study the overall impact of the additional teaching hour on students, staff and community partners over the next three years. A report will be released subsequent to the end of the 2020-21 school year.

The government’s 10-year education plans aim to improve educational outcomes and better prepare young people for the future. They set objectives in priority areas to create lifelong learners, support educational leaders and bring stability to the system.
