FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Department of Justice and Public Safety's New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization issued the following weather warning today:
Environment Canada is forecasting significant snowfall that will change to freezing rain, ice pellets or rain for southern and western New Brunswick beginning tonight and into the weekend. There is a significant chance of an extended period of freezing rain with the greatest risk for western and central areas. Snowfall amounts could reach or exceed 15 centimetres in northwestern New Brunswick. There may also be significant rain in the south, especially along the Fundy coast with rainfall amounts possibly exceeding 25 millimetres.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.
New Brunswickers are reminded to be prepared in the event of an emergency or power outage and are reminded to have everything they need for at least 72 hours following a storm. This includes preparing an emergency kit for home and car; knowing what to do during power outages; and knowing how to stay safe during an emergency.
An emergency kit should include food, water, batteries, battery-powered radio, first-aid supplies and any special items such as prescriptions, infant formula and equipment for people with disabilities.
