ST. GEORGE (CNB) – The following is released today by the Department of Public Safety's New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization:

The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization established TODAY, Monday, Dec. 20, a disaster financial assistance satellite office in St. George. Staff there will be available to help people with the claims process.

The office is located at the Family Worship Centre, 89 Mount Pleasant Rd., St. George. The office will be open today from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and subsequently from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Residents affected by the storm surges of Dec. 5-6 and the heavy rainfall of Dec. 13-14 should report their damages through Service New Brunswick at 1-888-298-8555. This is the first step in accessing government assistance. Residents may also report their damages online.

Health and safety inspections have already begun for affected areas. Several inspection teams worked through the weekend, assessing damage and providing advice to residents. Additional teams will be deployed throughout the week.

Emergency social services are available for those affected, including emergency accommodations for those out of their homes

Advance payments are available for those who qualify for disaster financial assistance and are in immediate need of financial assistance. It is expected that the first advance cheques will be issued early this week. To date, about 575 individual reports of damage to private property have been received.

Inspection teams are working as quickly as possible to respond to those in need, and they will work to address the most urgent needs first.
