FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued by Social Development Minister Cindy Miles:

Every year on Nov. 29, we recognize Children and Youth in Care Day – a day for young people in care to take pride in their achievements and to look ahead to bright futures filled with possibility. It is also an important occasion for all of us to acknowledge their resilience and honour their journeys.

Children and youth in care live with foster families, with kin, or in community-based resources, and each carries a unique story of strength and perseverance. Often faced with hardships at a young age, their stories motivate us to do better and strengthen the supports around them. That is why we are committed to the development of an action plan that will guide the implementation of the Child and Youth Well-Being Act. Investing early in children helps build a stronger province by reducing the risk of homelessness, boosting educational outcomes and supporting mental well-being before challenges become more complex. Through early, proactive action, we aim to give young people every opportunity to thrive.

This past week, I had the opportunity to meet with young people during a youth-in-care roundtable. Their insights reaffirmed how essential it is to ensure young voices in care guide our decisions. That is why, today, I am pleased to announce the creation of the minister’s advisory council for children and youth. In the coming months, this council will bring together former youth in care, government representatives and community partners to advise on programs, services and policies that support children and youth in care, or those previously in care. Their perspectives will help us strengthen the implementation of the act and ensure the work we do reflects what these young people tell us they need to succeed.

The council’s members will also reflect the diverse languages, cultures – including Indigenous communities – and geographic regions of the province.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our foster families, group home staff, kinship caregivers, social workers and the many partners who walk alongside vulnerable children and youth every day. Your dedication, compassion and support make a meaningful difference in their lives.

Together, we will continue to uplift children and youth in care, support their dreams and help them become confident, active participants in shaping the future of our province.
