FREDERICTON (NB) – The government has introduced legislation that, if passed, would eliminate the use of registration stickers on all vehicles, including off-road and commercial vehicles, as part of efforts to modernize services and improve efficiency.
Amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act and related regulations would remove the requirement for those stickers next spring. Drivers would still need to renew their registration annually, and enforcement officials would confirm registration electronically.
“The proposed amendments reflect how technology has evolved and how we can make services more convenient for New Brunswickers,” said Local Government Minister Aaron Kennedy, who is also minister responsible for Service New Brunswick. “Eliminating licence plate stickers will simplify the registration process, reduce costs and save people time.”
To help drivers stay up to date with their registration, renewal reminders would continue to be offered by mail or email. Reminder notifications will also be available by text message in the coming weeks.
Under the new system, customers who renew their vehicle registration online would have the option to print their own registration certificates immediately after payment or have them mailed. People could also continue renewing their registration in person at a Service New Brunswick service centre or by calling TeleServices at 1-888-762-8600.
Service New Brunswick processes vehicle registrations on behalf of the Department of Justice and Public Safety.
