FREDERICTON (GNB) – A nine-unit affordable housing development is opening soon thanks to more than $3 million provided by the federal and provincial governments and the John Howard Society of Fredericton.
The development on Cliffe Street will be owned and operated by the society and offer housing to victims of intimate partner violence, families and non-elderly singles.
“Our government has made it clear that the status quo in housing is unacceptable,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “Every New Brunswicker deserves access to a safe, affordable place to live, and that’s why we’re working to help tenants find stability for the future with projects like this one.”
This funding collaboration consists of $2 million from the federal government’s Rapid Housing Initiative, $785,000 from the New Brunswick Housing Corporation and about $700,000 from the John Howard Society of Fredericton. As well, the City of Fredericton covered the costs of the building permits.
“We need to build more, build better and build bolder,” said federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson. “Through this investment our government is supporting those who need it most, here in New Brunswick and across the country. We are committed to strengthening communities through initiatives like this one.”
The New Brunswick Housing Corporation will invest an additional $1.18 million to provide rent supplements for tenants of this building over a 20-year period.
“Affordable family housing is more than just a roof; it’s the foundation for strong, healthy communities,” said John Barrow, executive director of the John Howard Society of Fredericton. “When families have a stable place to call home, children thrive, parents succeed and neighbourhoods grow stronger. This project marks a special milestone for the John Howard Society as our first family-oriented build and brings our affordable housing portfolio to 100 unique individuals affordably housed and supported through our programs.”
