FREDERICTON (GNB) – Efforts are being stepped up to diversify the New Brunswick agri-food and seafood markets.

Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Pat Finnigan recently participated in Salon International de l'Alimentation, which was an international food exhibition held in Toronto, as well as Seafood Expo Global, which is held annually in Barcelona, Spain.

“Attending events like these allow us to meet with buyers from around the globe and promote New Brunswick products in the international market,” said Finnigan. “With the ongoing threat of tariffs, now more than ever, New Brunswick’s businesses need to focus on market diversification.”

New Brunswick delegates at these events included representatives from the agri-food, aquaculture and seafood sectors. They spent time reinforcing relationships with existing customers, generating new customer leads and securing sales.

While in Spain, Finnigan hosted a “New Brunswick evening,” a special business event that connected New Brunswick companies with buyers from around the world. He also met with Canada’s ambassador to Spain and helped promote the province’s presence at the seafood show.

In Toronto, he joined Atlantic region partners at the Atlantic pavilion and met with ministers of agriculture from Ontario and Nova Scotia to talk about reducing interprovincial trade barriers and working together.

“It is such a pleasure to feature New Brunswick products at these events,’’ said Finnigan. “We have superior agri-food and seafood, and I am proud to be representing our province. Our department’s key strategy is market diversification, and we will continue to do all we can to support our producers.”
