MONCTON (GNB) – The New Brunswick Housing Corporation and a non-profit group in Moncton have partnered to create eight new public housing units.

“We know affordable housing remains top of mind for New Brunswickers, and projects like this speak directly to our commitment to safe and sustainable housing for all,” said Social Development Minister Jill Green, who is also minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “Rising Tide has been a valuable partner in this work, and I thank them for their commitment to affordable housing in Moncton.”

The eight new units are part of a 40-unit partnership with Rising Tide Community Initiatives over the next year. They are among the first new public housing units built in the province in nearly 40 years.

“Improving housing options for all New Brunswickers remains one of our primary goals,” said Rashmi Hawley, vice-president of facilities for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “We want to empower our citizens with safe, sustainable housing options, and I want to thank everyone involved for making this possible.”

These homes are part of the government’s $100 million commitment to build 380 new public housing units across New Brunswick, as outlined in the Housing for All strategy.

“Rising Tide is pleased to work with Housing NB and the City of Moncton to supply 40 additional affordable and supportive housing units in Moncton,” said Dale Hicks, president of Rising Tide Community Initiatives. “We have enjoyed a great working relationship with both levels of government, and this is allowing us to exceed our original goal of providing 153 units in the region.”

This new public housing will also include tenancy support services and health and wellness programs with funding from the Department of Social Development.

“Increasing the number of affordable housing units in our city is critically important,” said Deputy Mayor Paulette Thériault. “The City of Moncton has been proud to support Rising Tide in their efforts over the past several years, and this new partnership with the province will continue to advance their work, which directly and positively affects some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community.”

Building more affordable housing is one of several initiatives undertaken by the New Brunswick Housing Corporation to address the province’s housing needs.
