FREDERICTON (GNB) – A Government of New Brunswick request for assistance in dealing with spring flooding has been accepted by the federal government.

On Friday evening, New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs had a conversation with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the forecasted flood conditions along the Saint John River Valley and the need for federal assistance.

“The Prime Minister offered his support including the assistance of Canadian Armed Forces as needed and required,” said Premier Higgs. “For those living in affected areas, please continue to take necessary steps to protect yourselves and stay safe.  This includes paying attention to all warnings from the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization.”

“I know New Brunswickers are doing all they can to prepare for the flood. They should continue taking action to prepare for the flood as government does all it can to support them.”

Meetings between officials with the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization and representatives of the Canadian Armed Forces are taking place Friday night.

Flooding is forecast in more than 15 communities between Saint-François -de-Madawaska and Saint John in the coming days.
