EEL GROUND FIRST NATION (GNB) – An energy efficient house is being built in Eel Ground First Nation by a group of trades teachers and other volunteers. The house will be donated to a member of the community when completed.

“Improving access and exposure to trades is one of the objectives of our 10-year education plan, and this house project is a great opportunity for trades teachers to learn about the latest generation of green technology and to later transfer that knowledge to their students,” said Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Lisa Harris.

Harris spoke on behalf of Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brian Kenny while visiting the site.

“We are honoured to be selected to participate in the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Office of First Nations Education’s small house project,” said Eel Ground First Nation Chief George Ginnish. ‟The project utilizes labour from high school technology and construction programs across the province to construct components in school shops for assembly at the site with construction professionals. The one-bedroom unit will be given this summer to a community member as part of our Social Housing Program.”

Over four days, eight trades teachers will construct the exterior of the house. The professional learning workshops will include training on the solar power and heating systems.

The government’s 10-year education plans aim to improve educational outcomes and better prepare young people for the future. They set objectives in priority areas to create lifelong learners, support educational leaders and bring stability to the system.
