Investment in new mobile command post for emergency operations12 June 2018
FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has invested $150,000 to provide a new command post vehicle for the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization of the Department of Justice and Public Safety.
The new Provincial Emergency Command Post vehicle has all the necessary equipment to provide communications, emergency management and co-ordination anywhere in the province.
“The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization plays a critical role in assisting municipalities and regions to fulfill their responsibilities in times of crisis,” said Justice and Public Safety Minister Denis Landry. “Its mandate is to co-ordinate provincial response operations during emergencies. They need to have the necessary tools in order to perform their tasks.”
The previous vehicle dated from the early 1980s and was no longer reliable.
“The command post can be deployed during various emergency situations such as flood events, searches for missing persons, train derailments, ice storms with extensive power outages, as well as training events,” said Greg MacCallum, director of the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization. “It is an essential tool in assisting communities to provide efficient emergency management.”
“The provincial government makes it a priority to enhance the safety and security of New Brunswickers and build strong, resilient communities,” said Landry. “Maintaining a mobile command post capability will improve the organization’s capacity to assist communities and ensure reliable, interoperable communications at emergency sites throughout the province. This is consistent with the government’s commitment to increase preparedness for extreme weather events.”
The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization co-ordinates preparedness for emergencies. It also co-ordinates provincial response operations during emergencies and administers disaster financial assistance programs during recovery. It works at provincial, regional and municipal levels to ensure that communities are protected during all phases of an emergency.
