FREDERICTON (GNB) – Senior leaders from New Brunswick's five health partners held their first system-wide planning session in Fredericton today.

"Now that Rebuilding Health Care Together – The Provincial Health Plan 2013-2018 has been released, administrators are beginning discussions about how it can be put into operation to build a stronger, more sustainable health-care system," said Health Minister Hugh Flemming. "This type of system-wide discussion is important because successfully rebuilding our health-care system will require the participation of all the partners at all levels of their organizations."

About 30 people representing the senior leadership teams of the Department of Health, Horizon Health Network, Vitalité Health Network, FacilicorpNB and the New Brunswick Health Council participated.

During the day-long session, they discussed the health status of New Brunswickers and its link to health-care services; and, system performance and strategic goals.

They also examined key provincial priorities connected to the provincial health plan such as the Action Plan for Mental Health, the Comprehensive Diabetes Strategy, the Primary Health Care Framework, optimizing the delivery of clinical services, and the Extra-Mural Program's role in home care.

"During the public consultations leading up to the provincial health plan, New Brunswickers told us they want a sustainable health-care system that meets their needs now and in the future,” said Flemming. “This can only be achieved through a collaborative approach."
