FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement of condolence was issued today by Premier David Alward:

It is with deep sadness that I offer, on behalf of the provincial government and of all New Brunswickers, our deepest condolences to the people of Lac-Mégantic and to the residents of Quebec following the tragic explosion that occurred on Saturday, July 6.

Quebec is our neighbour, and Quebecers are our friends, and in many cases, family members. There are uncountable bonds of affection and friendship between us and so, as friends do, we offer our sincere sympathy and our support at this time of great loss and suffering.

We have a long history of sharing between our two provinces. During the past weekend, New Brunswick fire crews helped combat fires burning in northern Quebec; in the past, Quebec crews helped us fight forest fires here.

We stand ready to provide any material support that might be helpful during this difficult time.

In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of this stricken community.
