In New Brunswick, policing is a local government responsibility. For local governments that have not established their own police force, municipal policing is provided by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police under contract to the province. The province assesses each local government its share of the cost, by a formula based on population and tax base. Below is the 2024 projected cost of policing services for local governments released by the New Brunswick Department of Justice and Public Safety.
For local governments not shown in the table below, policing services are deemed to be provided by the Minister of Local Government and Local Governance Reform as stipulated under Regulation 2022-50 Local Governments Establishment and will therefore receive a separate budget and tax rate for policing services from the Minister of Local Government and Local Governance Reform.
