The Small Communities Fund, a component of the federal New Building Canada Fund, provides funding for smaller communities to build projects that deliver on local needs. Projects are cost-shared equally between federal, provincial and municipal governments, for a total investment of more than $117 million.  Over $28 million in combined federal, provincial, and municipal funding remains to be allocated to eligible projects.

New Brunswick municipalities, rural communities, local service districts, regional service commissions, water and wastewater commissions, band councils and the private sector whose application is supported by a resolution from a local government are eligible to apply.

The funding categories are:

  •     highways and roads,
  •     public transit,
  •     disaster mitigation,
  •     connectivity and broadband,
  •     innovation,
  •     wastewater,
  •     green energy,
  •     drinking water,
  •     solid waste management,
  •     brownfield redevelopment,
  •     local and regional airports,
  •     shortline railways,
  •     shortsea shipping,
  •     passenger ferries services,
  •     culture,
  •     recreation,
  •     tourism, and
  •     civic assets and municipal buildings.
