Perception Surveys - Overview

The provincial perception surveys are based on school effectiveness research. Survey responses provide school staff, Parent School Support Committees (PSSCs), school districts, and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development with data for making informed decisions as they plan school and system improvements. Survey results provide a starting point for discussions on many aspects of school practices related to student learning.

The OurSCHOOL (formerly Tell Them From Me) online survey service provides several reports for each school. The One-Click Report presents student opinions about drivers of success, including student engagement, sense of belonging, attendance, motivation, relevance and effective learning time. The Bullying Report includes detailed information about the amount of bullying perceived by students, where and when it occurs, reasons they believe it occurs and how it is managed by school personnel.

Survey content is slightly different for elementary students vs. middle and high school students to accommodate student reading skills and appropriateness of topics.

Students participated in the survey in November-December 2018. Reports are based on responses from 8,718 elementary students (Grades 4 and 5) and 28,989 middle and high school students in the Anglophone sector. All students in Grades 4-12 have the opportunity to complete the survey.
