The Anderson Bridge, which spans across the Northwest Miramichi River in Miramichi, opened to traffic in 1953. The bridge is part of the Route 8 network, which is heavily used by used by industry, residents, tourists, and businesses. It’s a key link in connecting the northern and southern parts of the province.

In 2016, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure reduced the bridge to one-lane of traffic with traffic lights on both sides due to deterioration issues.

Construction started on the replacement structure in 2020. The bridge foundations along with the steel structure were completed in the fall of 2022. A second contract for the bridge deck and approaches is planned to be tendered in early 2023.

The new bridge is anticipated to open to traffic in the summer of 2024. Once opened, the former structure will be demolished.

The lifespan of the new bridge is approximately 75 years.
