Waste Reduction in Schools

Tips and resources for reducing waste at school.

Tips for reducing waste

Help keep your school clean with these fun and exciting ways to reduce waste at school.

  • Recycle: Provide and use bins within schools for recyclable materials.
  • Reuse: Provide bins for scrap paper that can be used for working out math problems or draft copies of reports. Once reused, this material can be composted or recycled.
  • Beverage Containers: Provide and use bins for redeemable beverage containers. Funds received from the return of these containers could help fund additional bins, school programs or resources.
  • Composting: Set up a composting program for organics at your school.
  • Education: Provide waste reduction educational opportunities through guest speakers, field trips, projects, best practices and participating in environmental theme days (i.e., green shirt).
  • Environmental Committee: Form an environmental committee with students and staff to discuss ways to reduce waste and their impact on the environment.
