WHAT ARE WE DOING TO ADDRESS AND PREVENT SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN NEW BRUNSWICK?

In 2018, the Women’s Equality Branch (WEB) published a document entitled: “Preventing and Responding to Sexual Violence in New Brunswick: A Framework for Action”.  The vision is to eliminate sexual violence through the development and implementation of a comprehensive response for all those affected, thereby contributing to healthy individuals, families, and communities.

Together with the Sexual Violence New Brunswick, WEB has established a committee to oversee the implementation of the framework. The committee includes membership from community agencies delivering sexual assault prevention services, government departments, law enforcement, and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program among others.

In order to accomplish its mission, the implementation committee will focus on identifying and prioritizing actions within the following four key result areas:

  1. Prevention and awareness;
  2. Professional education and training;
  3. Intervention; and
  4. Policy, research, and evaluation.

Initiating prevention and awareness strategies are a first step to understanding sexual violence and to enhancing the response to those who have experienced sexual violence.
