Understanding your proficiency level

Learn more about the proficiency placement tool and get a better understanding of your proficiency levels.

Overview

All learning modules are aligned with the proficiency levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). If you are unsure of your proficiency level in French, there is a Placement Tool to assist you. Once submitted, you will receive an e-mail from Services linguistiques with your results within two business days. The tool is opened during the registration periods only and access is closed between sessions.

Global levels

In general, subsequent to this fairly detailed study, the equivalences between the two scales are fairly clear, especially when one considers the sub-scales, which helps define the CEFR Global Scale and which allow more precise correlation between the two scales:

OPI Scale CEFR Scale
Unratable  No equivalence
Novice No equivalence
Basic A1/A2.1
Basic Plus A2
Intermediate B1.1
Intermediate Plus B1.2
Advance B2.1
Advance Plus B2.2/C1
Superior C1

It must be noted that the OPI Basic level straddles CEFR levels A1 and A2.1, and that the Advance Plus level straddles levels B2 and C1. In other words, some of the descriptors for the higher CEFR level apply to a “lower” OPI level. Level C2 is beyond the range measured by the OPR scale (equivalent more to Level 5 of the IART and Global Affairs scales).
