Pedagogy

Learn more about our learning modules, how they are designed and our action-based approach.

Overview

The Services Linguistiques learning modules have been designed to align with the competency levels of the CEFR. They have been created to introduce a wide range of vocabulary, syntax and language functions of each level.

Our learning is based on the Neurolinguistic Approach and well as the pedagogy of the Action-Based Approach. The themes and learning have been designed for adult learners. Our platform provides many diversified opportunities for interactive learning using technology in service of learning. This includes authentic videos and articles, as well as tools for recording and interacting both synchronously and asynchronously with your learning coach.

That individual will help guide you and provide personalized feedback. Our tools will help you understand your current learning profile. Our mastery-based approach provides tools to see whether you have “got it” or “not yet.”

Neurolinguistic approach

The neurolinguistic approach (NLA) is a relatively new paradigm for the teaching and learning of languages developed by Joan Netten, Ph.D. (retired professor from Newfoundland and Labrador’s Memorial University) and Claude Germain, Ph.D. (professor emeritus at Université du Québec à Montréal).

The approach stems from research carried out by the authors to explain the success of Intensive French.

In New Brunswick, Intensive French became an official program in New Brunswick schools in 2008, replacing the Core French program.  With Pre-Intensive at grade 4, Intensive French (at grade 5) and Post-Intensive French (grades 6 though 12), the Intensive French program was fully implemented in New Brunswick schools by 2016.

This same approach is used in the learning modules on the Services linguistiques platform so that educators can become familiar with the learning design. In addition to the NLA, the learning modules are aligned to the competency levels of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Mastery learning

Our learning modules are designed around the broad concept of Mastery Learning. Learners start with pre-assessing their language competency. This can be validated in relation to the Placement tool assessment, if required. By completing the self-assessment of language skills, the learner can identify areas for growth and start the learning cycle with this in mind. The learner is placed at the appropriate level of learning based of the levels as described by the Common European Framework of reference. This is based not only on oral proficiency, but on all the language competencies. As the learner progresses, they will be able to see the I CAN statements that they have achieved and the number of times that they have achieved them successfully. Along the way, learners will complete assignments on the platform which are designed to verify key skills. The coach will provide specific feedback on the assignment submissions to ensure that learners are advancing to meet the learning goals.

Understanding current proficiency levels during your career

The design of the learning modules can help you, the learner, know whether you have Got it! or Not yet! The skills are tracked on the platform to see the learning progression and gauge when it is time to move to the next level. Ask your coach how to see this view from within the module so that you can see your progress in real time!

Our platform design

The Services linguistiques platform is designed for different kinds of users. It can support the learning for those who wish to enroll in classes, by having a large assortment of materials curated and presented together, by skill, by theme and by level of proficiency. It offers additional materials to support enrichment or additional practice for those learners wishing to take a deep dive into their learning. For those independent spirits, or those who simply need to have flexibility in their learning times, the materials are there 24/7 and 365 days per year. With SL, you have an assigned coach for qualify feedback on your work. This can happen synchronously or asynchronously.

In addition to the modules, there is a language portfolio to track your development and experiences across the span of your career. If that isn’t great enough, there are also additional resources on the platform which may help you in your career (links to streamed shows, live international radio, newspapers from around the works, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other writing tools!).

In addition to the learning tools, there are opportunities to socialize, to participate in cultural events and more!
