Teacher’s Certificate

A teacher’s certificate is an official document that is required to teach in public elementary, middle and high schools in New Brunswick.

All requirements for obtaining the certificate and instructions for submitting an application are provided on each Application Form: A, B or C.

Below are the academic requirements for each level of certification. In the description of the requirements, you will note references to Teachable Subjects. You can find these here.

Teachers trained in New Brunswick

If you obtained your Bachelor of Education degree in New Brunswick, please use Form A. .

SUMMARY OF ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH LEVEL OF CERTIFICATION

  • Approved Bachelor’s Degree in teacher education
  • Minimum of 120 university credit hours (excluding credit hours for practice teaching) with:
  • 30 credit hours in pedagogical training

            AND

  • 30 credit hours in a teachable subject and 30 credit hours in other teachable subjects
      OR
  • a major (24 credit hours) and a minor (18 credit hours) in two teachable subjects and 18 other credit hours in teachable subjects
  • 18 week teaching practicum
  • 15 week teaching practicum
  • Certificate 5 and
    • an approved Master of Education degree or a master’s degree in a teachable subject with 30 credit hours at the graduate level;
    • OR
    • a non-degree program with 30 credit hours at the graduate level in teachable subjects that leads to an additional major, two additional minors, or an additional minor and one concentration.
  • Total of 180 university credit hours, (excluding credit hours for teaching practicum) with 30 approved graduate credits.

Teachers with a Teacher’s Certificate from another Canadian province or territory

If you hold a teaching certificate from another Canadian province or territory, please use Form B.

SUMMARY OF ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH LEVEL OF CERTIFICATION

  • Valid Teacher’s Certificate from another province or territory of Canada
  • Approved Bachelor’s Degree in teacher education
  • Less than 150 university credit hours (excluding credit hours for the teaching practicum)
  • Valid Teacher’s Certificate from another province or territory of Canada
  • Approved Bachelor’s Degree in teacher education
  • Minimum of 150 university credit hours (excluding credit hours for the teaching practicum) with 45 credit hours in pedagogical training
  • Valid Teacher’s Certificate from another province or territory of Canada
  • Certificate 5 and
    • an approved Master of Education degree or a master’s degree in a teachable subject with 30 credit hours at the graduate level;
    • OR
    • a non-degree program with 30 credit hours at the graduate level in teachable subjects that leads to an additional major, two additional minors, or an additional minor and one concentration.
  • Total of 180 university credit hours, (excluding credit hours for the teaching practicum) with 30 approved graduate credits.

- Teachers with a Teacher’s Certificate from another country

If you hold a teaching certificate from a country other than Canada, please use Form C.

SUMMARY OF ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH LEVEL OF INTERIM CERTIFICATION 

  • Valid teaching license from the country where the teacher training program was completed and where the teacher worked.
  • Approved Bachelor’s Degree in teacher education
  • Minimum of 120 university credit hours (excluding credit hours for the teaching practicum) with:
    • 30 credit hours in pedagogical training
    • 30 credit hours in a teachable subject and 30 credit hours in other teachable subjects
      OR
    • a major (24 credit hours) and a minor (18 credit hours) in two teachable subjects and 18 other credit hours in teachable subjects
  • 18 weeks teaching practicum
  • Valid teaching license from the country where the teacher training program was completed and where the teacher worked.
  • Approved Bachelor’s Degree in teacher education
  • Minimum of 150 university credit hours (excluding credit hours for the teaching practicum) with:
    • 45 credits in pedagogical training
    • 30 credit hours in a teachable subject and 30 credit hours in other teachable subjects
      OR
