Credit Requirements to upgrade to a Teacher’s Certificate 5 – Form I

The teaching certificate 5 requires a total of 150 university credit hours (excluding credit hours for the teaching practicum) with 45 approved credits in pedagogical training. The 30 additional credits required to move from level 4 (120 credit hours) to level 5 (150 credit hours) are distributed as follows:

  • 20 credit hours approved at the 3000 level or higher
  • 10 credit hours approved at the 1000 level or equivalent (e.g.: approved courses given by the New Brunswick Teachers' Assocaition or the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development).

Credit hours obtained must first be related to pedagogical training in order to reach the required 45 credit hours. Following these, credit hours should then be earned for, teachable subjects. Please have your courses approved by Teacher Certification before taking them by using Form I.

 

When approved courses have been completed, an application for a higher-level certificate must be submitted using the appropriate form (K), submitting an official transcript, and paying the fee.





Credit Requirements to upgrade to a Teacher’s Certificate 6 - Form J

The applicant must first hold a Teacher's Certificate 5.

The Teacher's Certificate 6 requires a total of 180 university credit hours (excluding credit hours for the teaching practicum), with 30 approved graduate credits. The graduate credit hours must allow you to obtain:

  • an approved master’s degree in education (30 graduate credit hours)
  •  a master's degree in a teachable subject (30 graduate credit hours)
  • a non-degree program with 30 graduate credits that leads to:
    • a additional major (24 credits),
    • two additional minors (18 credits each) or
    • an additional minor (18 credits) and a concentration (9 credits).

Please have your courses approved by the Office of Teacher Certification before taking them by using Form J.
