Safety tips for a hurricane:

  • Secure your home or find a safe place to wait out the storm
  • Monitor local weather reports
  • Prepare an emergency kit
  • Trim and remove damaged trees and limbs
  • Clear and secure rain gutters and downspouts
  • Ensure sump pumps are working
  • Fill your car’s gas tank. If you don’t own a car connect with friends or family if you need a drive.
  • Secure all loose outdoor objects like garbage cans, BBQs, furniture

During a hurricane stay inside or seek secure shelter. It is important that you do not visit any coastlines or leave your place of shelter to watch the storm.

Plan ahead

Every household needs an emergency plan. It will help families to know what to do in case of an emergency and it takes less than 30 minutes to organize. Family members should take the time to discuss how and where to meet, how to contact each another and what to do in different situations. Write it down and keep it in a safe place.


Make an emergency kit

You should have all the necessities for yourself and your family in your emergency kit, such as:

  • Water – 2 liters per person per day
  • Non-perishable food
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery or cranked-power radio
  • Prescription medications
  • Specialty items. E.g., infant formula, pet food, etc.
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Candles, matches or a lighter
  • Batteries
  • Cash
  • Spare keys
  • Copies of your emergency plan
  • Copies of important papers like your driver’s license, birth certificate and insurance papers
  • Face mask – cloth or disposable
  • Hand sanitizer
