Program support

FireSmart NB aims to promote fire-resilient communities provincewide. Each community and region must have practical tools to implement their mitigation and FireSmart initiatives.

We have established a robust role structure and accompanying training programs to elevate the capabilities of regional FireSmart teams. Our collective aim is to empower and equip FireSmart teams, enabling them to create resilient communities and significantly reduce the impact of wildfires.

Level 1 – FireSmart Ambassador

FireSmart Ambassadors (PDF 129 KB) play a vital role in promoting FireSmart principles and raising awareness about wildfire prevention in your community. The focus is on engaging and educating the community, not conducting technical assessments.

Training

The Level 1 FireSmart Ambassador training is a self-paced, comprehensive, four-module online course accessible to individuals of all backgrounds and community roles. It typically takes around three hours to complete and is a prerequisite for Level 2-4 positions.

Level 2 – Neighbourhood Recognition Program Specialist

The Neighbourhood Recognition Program (NRP) Specialist (PDF 138 KB) oversees and supports the implementation of the FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program within the local area. Duties include guiding residents and neighbourhoods through the NRP process, which involves establishing committees, conducting wildland fire hazard assessments, and organizing FireSmart events.

To become an NRP Specialist, you must complete Level 1 Ambassador training and subsequent Level 2 training. You must also meet specific eligibility requirements for this position.

Level 3 – Home Ignition Zone Specialist

The Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) Specialist oversees the FireSmart Canada Advanced Home Assessment Program and other endorsed home assessment programs within your local community. The primary objective is to assist residents in identifying and mitigating potential property hazards associated with wildfires.

Guided by a FireSmart Program Coordinator or other community authority, the HIZ Specialist performs authorized FireSmart home assessments upon residents' request. You then submit the assessments for approval, communicate the results to the residents, and offer advice and guidance on adhering to the FireSmart Canada Home Ignition Zone guidelines.

Training

HIZ Specialist training will be conducted exclusively through in-person workshops at predetermined locations. Completion of Level 1 Ambassador Training is a prerequisite for participation in the HIZ Specialist Training.

This role entails working closely with community organizations, local governments, and provincial/territorial wildfire management agencies to coordinate FireSmart programs, projects, budgets, and grant applications and potentially contribute to Community Wildfire Protection Plans.
