The majority of physicians in New Brunswick are remunerated on a fee-for service basis. However, New Brunswick physicians may choose among several flexible remuneration packages. Options can include one or more of: fee-for-service, Salary, or Sessional.
Payment is based on the number and types of services provided. The majority of physicians in New Brunswick are remunerated on a fee-for service basis. The details of the fee-for-service remuneration are contained in the Physician Manual which represents the contract negotiated by the province with the New Brunswick Medical Society.
Salaried compensation is a fixed remuneration which includes benefits as specified in the Medical Pay Plan. Approximately 25% of the physicians are remunerated on a salaried basis. Positions designated as salaried are usually located in a hospital setting or in a Community Health Center.
Sessional services rendered by physicians are paid for on an hourly basis. Sessional payment arrangements are for designated services, such as Emergency room services, nursing home services and other areas as approved by the Department of Health.
