About ABCs

Learn more about ABCs and their important work.

What are ABCs?

ABCs do important work on behalf of New Brunswickers by providing advice to government, helping ensure delivery of services to residents and regulating key sectors of the economy.

Work with like-minded people and get involved in new ABCs to:

  • Make a difference in your community
  • Champion a cause you’re passionate about
  • Learn something new or hone your skills
  • Inform programs and policies

ABCs provide the opportunity to influence decisions that shape the quality of life for all New Brunswickers. Participation is one of the most effective ways individuals can contribute and have an active role in decisions that impact our communities.

Types of ABCs

ABCs  vary in the size, type and mandate. Some have regulatory, adjudicative and formal judgment or decision-making authority; some provide the public with vital goods and services; and others play a large role in developing policy and communicating these policies to New Brunswickers.

Advisory bodies

Advisory bodies provide advice and recommendations to the province on industry, sector specific or social and economic programs and policies. Examples include:

  • Midwifery Council of New Brunswick
  • New Brunswick Public Libraries Board
  • New Brunswick Women’s Council
  • Committee on the Status of Species at Risk
  • Minister's Advisory Committee on Teacher Certification

Regulatory and adjudicative bodies

Regulatory and adjudicative bodies license, make rules, regulate, or oversee a sector. They may hear appeals, adjudicate, judge, or arbitrate. Members often require professional credentials and/or specific expertise, or where the decisions rendered are complex or have precedent-setting implications. Some may perform both regulatory and adjudicative functions. Examples include:

  • Energy and Utilities Board
  • Human Rights Commission
  • New Brunswick Combat Sport Commission
  • New Brunswick Insurance Board
  • New Brunswick Police Commission
  • Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission

Crown agencies

Government-owned entities established through provincial statutes where direction is provided through a board of directors, appointed by government. These ABCs may be administrative or decision-making bodies, that provide oversight of operational or managerial functions, and are usually responsible for making budgetary decisions. Some larger Crown corporations may be commercial or service delivery in nature and operate at arm’s length from government. Agencies may require members with professional credentials and/or specific qualifications.

ABCs that fall under this category are divided into Level I and II crown agencies based on size, complexity, and autonomy. Examples include:

Level I

  • Financial and Consumer Services Commission
  • New Brunswick Liquor Corporation
  • New Brunswick Power Generation Corporation
  • New Brunswick Research & Productivity Council
  • Opportunities New Brunswick
  • Service New Brunswick

Level II

  • Kings Landing Corporation
  • Recycle New Brunswick
  • New Brunswick Arts Board
  • New Brunswick Legal Aid Services Commission
  • New Brunswick Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation

Bringing together different perspectives

Board members ensure ABCs fulfill their mandates and meet the needs of New Brunswick residents. It’s important that membership reflects the diversity of our population including individuals from all regions of the province representing our two official linguistic communities, First Nations communities, visible minority groups, persons with disabilities, etc.

Membership diversity is important on ABCs as diverse members bring:

  • different knowledge and experiences broadening input, opinions, ideas, and approaches
  • unique perspectives on the needs and views of stakeholders
  • new connections
