Positions To Be Filled
The Accessibility Advisory Board (Board) is looking to appoint members to the first ever Advisory Committee on Accessible Information and Communications. This Committee will help shape the minimum standards for accessibility in New Brunswick.
Committee members will work to improve how information is created, shared, and received, so that everyone has access to important information, and can respond to it. The requirements developed could apply to websites, documents, and communication services.
Who we’re looking for
The Board is interested in individuals who reflect a diversity of experiences, disabilities and age groups - particularly those who face barriers, and/or have expert knowledge in accessible information and communications.
All successful candidates must be residents of New Brunswick, 19 years or over, and must have:
Experience with disability and/or subject matter expertise in information and communications
1. Experience with disability means:
- A person with a disability, or a person who works with, or on behalf of people with a disability, including close contacts who support individuals who live with a disability.
- A member of a provincial agency or provincial branch of a national agency that works on behalf of or represents people with a disability.
2. Subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Assistive and augmentative communication technology;
- Accessible content design and accessible documents (formats);
- Equitable communication (plain language, etc);
- Sign language (ASL, LSQ);
- Artificial Intelligence;
- Digital accessibility for web, software and mobile apps;
- Universal design;
- Legal and regulatory knowledge;
- Development of accessibility standards
Other Considerations:
Written and spoken competence in English or French, or both English and French is required. Please indicate your language ability in the two official languages in your application.
The composition of the Committee’s linguistic, Indigenous, gender and geographic representation is a consideration for appointment.
We are also looking to have broad representation of sectors who deliver service to the public, such as business, community, public and academic sectors.
About Us
The Board makes recommendations to the Minister on regulatory standards for accessibility requirements in priority areas to make places, products and services more accessible for everyone. The Board’s mandate includes establishing Advisory Committees to support the development of proposed accessibility standards, which define the minimum requirements.
Role of The advisory committee members
The Committee will assist the Board in making recommendations to the Minister for Accessibility Standards for Information and Communications by:
- Reviewing accessibility standards from other provinces or countries.
- Reviewing policies and requirements already in place in New Brunswick and work with the Board to provide suggestions for improvemen.
- Engaging with people with a disability and/or who face barriers, and people that work on behalf of or represent people with a disability, to ensure the recommendations reflect real needs.
- Engaging with organizations that could need to follow the proposed accessibility standards to understand their perspectives, including level of awareness, capacity and concerns.
- Considering the feasibility of accessibility recommendations for different types of organizations and suggest ways to support success.
- Collaborating and communicating effectively with other Committee members.
Expectations
Meetings are expected to take place monthly or once every two months, with additional work and preparation between meetings when necessary. Most meetings will be virtual with some in-person (with virtual option).
Supports will be made available so that everyone can fully participate.
What’s in it for you
Compensation: Committee members will receive a daily allowance for preparation and participation in meetings, set by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council. Members will also be reimbursed for reasonable costs related to accommodation, meals, and travel, as outlined in the provincial government’s travel policy.
