New Brunswick Forest Products Commission

Two (2) Commission members: one (1) to represent the Forest Industries of New Brunswick and one (1) to represent Producers

The New Brunswick Forest Products Commission (the Commission) is a quasi-judicial decision-making body that operates under the authority of the Natural Products Act and the Forest Products Act. The Commission is composed of seven (7) members appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council, as follows:

  • a Chair;
  • two (2) members representing producers;
  • two (2) members representing New Brunswick forest industries; and
  • two (2) members representing the Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development.

The Commission is responsible for the overall supervision of producer boards formed under the Natural Products Act. The commodities under its regulatory mandate account for as high as 100 million dollars in primary forest product sales, or nearly 20 percent of New Brunswick’s primary forest product production and 5 to 6 million dollars of silviculture work on private lands.

The Commission has a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • conducting annual reviews of the seven (7) forest products marketing boards;
  • data collection, auditing and reporting on activities of marketing boards as required under the Natural Products Act and Transportation of Primary Forest Products Act;
  • conciliation, overseeing arbitration and conducting investigations;
  • hearing appeals on matters relating to marketing boards;
  • training and special projects;
  • issuing orders and regulations relating to the operation of a regulated marketing system and administering regulations; and
  • recommending and completing necessary amendments to both Provincial and Federal regulations.

Current position(s) to be filled:

The provincial government is currently seeking two (2) Commission members: one (1) to represent the Forest Industries of New Brunswick and one (1) to represent Producers. Expressions of interest are invited to fill this position but may also be used to fill future vacancies. Please indicate which position you would like to be considered for in your application.

Qualifications/Commitment:

Candidates must:

  • be a resident of New Brunswick;
  • be an effective communicator;
  • be able to communicate in both English and French (considered an asset but is not essential for consideration on the Commission); and
  • be a team player, a strategic and analytical thinker especially in the area of problem solving.

Candidates for the position of industry representative must have demonstrated leadership within the forestry industry sector and have experience working in organizations. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of ten (10) years recent experience with the forest industry, preferably with experience in forest products procurement.

Candidates for the position of producer representative must have demonstrated leadership within the private woodlot sector and have experience working in organizations. Preference will be given to candidates with ten (10) years recent experience as a woodlot owner and producer, participating in the private woodlot sector.

Essential and Asset Qualifications:

The composition of the Commission’s gender and linguistic representation, as well as the cultural and geographic diversity of the province is a consideration for appointment. 

Conditions/Compensation:

The Commission meets approximately once per month with additional meetings required on occasion conducting appeal hearings and special meetings. Commission meetings are typically held in Fredericton with occasional meetings held in other venues. Overnight accommodation may be required. Meeting dates are determined on a per meeting basis.

Commission members receive a per diem of $150 for attendance at Commission meetings plus travel and meal expenses as per the Government of New Brunswick Travel Directive AD-2801.
