New Brunswick Women’s Council

Members

The New Brunswick Women’s Council is mandated to provide independent advice to the provincial government on matters of importance to women and their substantive equality while bringing issues to public attention.

The Council’s membership is comprised of up to 15 organizations (with each represented by a woman volunteer or staff member) and individual women. The membership operates via consensus-based decision-making.

The Council is currently seeking up to 9 members. 

Role of members:

Council members serve in a volunteer capacity and have three primary roles:

  • to inform the council’s study, consultation, and advice on issues of importance, interest, and concern to New Brunswick women and their substantive equality;
  • to help the council engage with the women of New Brunswick, as well as women-focused and/or equality-seeking groups in the province; and
  • to govern the council at a high level by setting directions and priorities, developing and implementing internal guidelines, etc.

Members engage in the council’s work in a way that:

  • recognizes the persistence of gender-based inequality and government’s responsibility to address it;
  • affirms human rights;
  • advances substantive equality for women;
  • recognizes that gender-based oppression intersects with other forms of oppression; and
  • is non-partisan.

Members are reimbursed for travel, accommodations, meals, etc. relating to council business and may claim per diems on certain occasions.

Members are appointed for terms of three years. Because of the schedule of call for memberships, members often end up serving for an additional year despite the expiry of their term for a total of four years.

Members whose terms are expiring are considered for reappointment by responding to a call for expressions of interest.

Essential Qualifications:

The candidate:

  • is a woman resident of New Brunswick age 18 or older OR a New Brunswick organization that has identified a woman 18 or older living in New Brunswick as its representative (organizations that are regional or national in scope may be considered if they have a New Brunswick-specific presence);*
  • can attend two-day in person meetings three times a year (while this is a requirement, please note that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the council is currently only meeting virtually);
  • can participate in email correspondence in a timely fashion as well as conference calls;
  • supports the objectives, mission, vision, and rights-affirming approach of Council;
  • has no conflicts of interest by virtue of other roles they occupy or activities they engage in (this would disqualify civil servants of Part I in GNB, political staff for an elected official, etc); and
  • can serve in a non-partisan manner.

*Includes trans and cisgender women. Individual applicants and representatives for organizational applicants must have lived in New Brunswick full time for 40 days preceding the submission of their expression of and be planning to continue to live in New Brunswick full-time during their term as a Council member, should they be appointed. Applicants who may be relocating outside of New Brunswick full or part time in the near future may be disqualified from consideration.

Selection Process

Submissions are reviewed by a Council committee. Candidates who meet the essential qualifications are assessed on technical competencies and representation assets. Candidates are then selected for interviews and contacted by the committee.

When making recommendations for appointments, the committee considers the strength of submissions as well as the overall composition of the council membership to ensure that it:

  • has linguistic balance and regional representation;
  • has the shared skills and expertise required;
  • is primarily composed of organizations; and
  • includes voices from identities, experiences, and communities that are often under-represented at decision-making tables.

While applicants from all areas of the province may be considered, the council is particularly seeking representation from Kent, Westmorland, Albert, Madawaska, Victoria, and Carleton counties as well as the portion of York Sunbury above Fredericton. The council is also particularly seeking representation from organizations at this time.

The council may also prioritize applicants from identities, experiences, and communities that are often underrepresented at decision-making tables, including women who are: francophone, 2SLGBTQIA+, First Nations, Metis, or Inuit, Black, racialized or of colour, immigrant or newcomer, vulnerable/marginalized for socio-economic reasons, disabled/living with a disability, deaf or hard of hearing, and/or blind or low vision.

Submissions that are incomplete, do not follow instructions, or are received after the deadline will not be considered.
