Community Emergency Preparedness and Training Program
This program is provided by the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (NB-EMO) to ensure that communities and other emergency responders have the necessary plans, skills and opportunities to practice vital response procedures. These include staff and volunteers associated with nursing homes, school districts, regional health authorities, municipalities, First Nations and private industry.
At present, 61 nursing homes, 15 First Nations, eight regional health authorities, 14 school districts, 103 municipalities and many industrial sites participate in the program. Others interested in learning more about and participating in the program should contact the Manager of Community Preparedness and Training, NB-EMO.
PLANNING ASSISTANCE - NB-EMO provides assistance in preparing emergency response plans. This includes meeting with elected officials, administrators, company officials and volunteers, and providing advice as they identify risks and plan for appropriate response procedures. NB-EMO also provides specialized in-service training to enable groups to better prepare for emergencies that may affect specific populations.
TRAINING EXERCISES - In order to be effective, emergency plans must be practiced, updated and validated. Regular training exercises are conducted, and these may involve field and/or tabletop formats. Exercise schedules are published on the NB EMO website, and co-operation is encouraged between various emergency response agencies. There is no charge for this service.
IN-SERVICE TRAINING - Training specific to individual audiences is conducted on an requested basis. An example of a group utilizing this service would be a Nursing Home that wished to have an outside instructor conduct training for staff in regard to evacuation. There is no charge for this service.
SELF-PACED LEARNING - A Basic Emergency Management CD-Rom is provided together with all course materials from the traditional classroom course to allow participants to study at their own pace. A certification workshop is held following completion of the CD-Rom to enable participants to enroll in advanced level training offered by NB-EMO. There is a nominal fee for this service.
CLASSROOM TRAINING - Training is a key component within any emergency management system. NB-EMO offers three classroom-style training courses: Basic Emergency Management, Emergency Operations Centre Management and Emergency Public Information. The courses are offered in English and French, and are held in various locations throughout the province. There is a NOMINAL REGISTRATION FEE.
