Premier reports on progress in rebuilding economy of Miramichi region24 August 2012
MIRAMICHI (GNB) – Premier David Alward visited Sunny Corner Enterprises Inc. today to provide an update on the efforts of the provincial government to rebuild the economy of Miramichi.
"A strong Miramichi region is critical to our government's plan to rebuild New Brunswick's economy and create jobs for families," said Alward. "The Miramichi Economic Development and Innovation Fund is making a difference. To date, the fund has supported 40 projects that have spurred job creation and increased investment in the communities of this region."
The four-year fund is providing $50 million to stimulate job creation and address the economic challenges of the Miramichi region. The fund supports projects that develop, diversify and grow the economy and communities of the region. Projects in Northumberland County and the northern portion of Kent County are eligible for assistance.
"Our plan for the Miramichi region is to invest in priority sectors that will support and accelerate the growth and innovation of our local entrepreneurs,” said Alward. "Since the announcement of this initiative less than a year ago, the fund has helped Miramichi businesses create and preserve more than 150 jobs."
For example, the provincial government has invested $1.6 million in Sunny Corner Enterprises Inc. to help increase its fabrication capabilities.
The fund has been providing incremental assistance since September 2011 and will continue to do so until March 31, 2015. Assistance may be in the form of a non-repayable contribution, interest-free or interest-bearing loans; or loan guarantees.
"We are fortunate in the Miramichi region to have world-class enterprises, innovative entrepreneurs and courageous exporters," said Alward. "We will continue to work with these leaders to create jobs in the communities of the Miramichi region and rebuild New Brunswick's economy."
