Affordable housing units officially opened in Saint John11 July 2012
SAINT JOHN (GNB) – Twelve new units for low-income individuals, families and people with disabilities were officially opened today at 11 Second St., Saint John.
“Investing in affordable housing is fundamental to rebuilding New Brunswick together,” said Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for seniors, housing and community non-profit organizations. “I am pleased to celebrate this project, which shows our government's commitment to enhancing the quality of life of individuals and families, while living within our means.”
The development was established by Jenny's Spring Housing Co-operative Ltd. and built at a cost of more than $1.3 million.
Completed in June, the development received $480,000 in federal funding to offset construction costs and almost $972,000 in rent supplements from the provincial government for 12 units.
“Our government is proud to contribute $480,000 in funding for this project,” said Saint John MP Rodney Weston. “These 12 new units will provide quality, affordable housing and benefit the economic and social well-being of the entire community.”
Weston appeared on behalf of Diane Finley, minister of human resources and skills development and minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.
Funding for the project was made available as a result of a joint investment under the 2009 extension of the Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Initiative.
The developer, Jenny's Spring Housing Co-operative Ltd., will include two units for persons with disabilities in the housing development.
This development was built to high energy-efficiency standards and involved consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of multi-unit residential buildings may qualify to receive incentives from Efficiency NB if the building meets energy efficiency targets.
