Fire Chief for a Day
Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Bruce Northrup holds the winning ballot in the annual Fire Chief for a Day draw. Each year, about 50,000 students from kindergarten to Grade 5 receive the “Fire Safety Gazette,” published by the Office of the Fire Marshal and which contains age-relevant fire prevention information as well as a ballot to enter the draw. This year’s winner is Margaret Andow, a Grade 3 French immersion student at Garden Creek School in Fredericton. She and her classmates will receive a special day of activities. Taking part in the draw are, from left: Charlie Kavanagh, president of the New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs; Northrup; David Gamble, a firefighter with the Oromocto Fire Department; Jeff Cross, regional fire marshal; and Randy Mactavish, president of the New Brunswick Association of Fire Prevention Officers.
