Government of New Brunswick

New Brunswick has a rapidly aging population. Government’s 2011-2016 Nursing Home Renovation and replacement Plan will better accommodate the increasing demand for nursing home beds.

With serious financial challenges facing the province, the Alward Government felt it was important to the taxpayers of New Brunswick to review the 2009 nursing home plan to identify efficiencies and savings, ensuring the projects outlined in the plan proceeded in the most cost effective way possible.

The review of the nursing home plan was based on a three-step process which included:

  • A demographic review
  • Nursing home facility assessments
  • A design standards review

As result, $110 million in savings was found and 354 nursing home beds will be created – 57 more than originally planned.  The estimated cost of the plan is now $329 million.

In addition, 704 new specialized care beds will be created to meet the increasing need for services for clients with Alzheimer’s and dementia.  These beds will help reduce waiting lists and transition seniors out of hospital into long-term care.

All projects are to be completed by 2015 - 2016.
