Volunteer opportunities truly exist in all communities. It may take a bit of research on your part, but with a bit of direction, you will be able to find opportunities that interest you.
Try the following:
- if you are interested in a specific cause, start by contacting organizations that work in that area;
- ask friends where they volunteer;
- browse the internet;
- listen to a local radio station;
- search the newspapers;
- contact a United Way office;
- contact a volunteer centre;
- watch for special events;
- contact your local municipality or recreation department; or
- contact local schools, churches or other institutions.
Many volunteer-based websites also have links to existing volunteer opportunities.
Through a partnership between the Government of New Brunswick and Bizcom, www.volunteerboard.ca has been developed to assist both volunteers and organizations in the volunteer search. This tool is free, and both volunteers and organizations may register and search for potential matches to their needs.
These are just a few of the ways that you can discover the opportunities around you. It may take time and research, but the benefits and feeling of accomplishment that you receive from volunteering will be well worth it in the end.
