FREDERICTON (CNB) – Persons interested in participating in a provincial conference on crime prevention being held March 28-29 in Fredericton are encouraged to register soon.
"Preventing crime is important to our government," said Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Robert Trevors. "We know that people want to work, live and invest in safe communities that are free of crime and victimization. Safe communities are strong communities."
The conference, Learning Together: Getting smarter on crime, will focus on building better integrated and more effective approaches to prevent and reduce crime. It is being hosted by the Department of Public Safety in conjunction with the National Crime Prevention Centre and the New Brunswick Association of Chiefs of Police. Trevors will open the conference with welcoming remarks on March 28.
The conference will offer sessions on a variety of crime prevention topics, including:
● New Brunswick’s strengths and challenges;
● equipping to prevent crime;
● making New Brunswick safer at less cost;
● how to make programs more effective;
● engaging youth to prevent crime;
● mental fitness in schools;
● managing prolific offenders; and
● supported housing for at-risk adults.
Guest speakers will come from New Brunswick and across Canada, including Irvin Waller, a prominent author, criminologist and champion of victims' rights from the University of Ottawa.
The conference will be a learning opportunity for community workers, educators, correctional workers, court officials, public policy experts, social workers, academics, health-care professionals, members of the business community, and anyone else interested in preventing and reducing crime in New Brunswick. It will also be part of a greater provincial effort to support stakeholders working together on crime and public safety issues.
More information – including the schedule, the sessions and the speakers – is on the conference website.
