FREDERICTON (CNB) – Two pieces of legislation were introduced in the legislative assembly today that would permit firefighters to perform rescues not related to fighting fires.
Local Government Minister Bruce Fitch introduced amendments to the Municipalities Act, while Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Robert Trevors introduced amendments to the Fire Prevention Act.
"I am proud to have worked with the New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs to bring these changes forward to allow firefighters to carry out this important work," said Fitch. "I am proud of our firefighters for all that they do, day in and day out, putting their lives on the line to save others, and for the work that they will do in future in light of these amendments."
These amendments were brought forward after consultation with fire chiefs, municipalities and other government departments.
"I thank the many firefighters who dedicate themselves to making New Brunswick safer for everyone," said Trevors. "I am satisfied that this legislation will allow firefighters to continue their important work and to expand their activities to help where they are most needed in our communities."
The changes to the Municipalities Act would establish non-fire related rescue as a service in the First Schedule under this legislation.
The amendments to the Fire Prevention Act would allow the provincial fire marshal to provide advice on non-fire related rescue activities and determine the content of training programs for firefighters wishing to conduct rescue operations.
