FREDERICTON (GNB) – Premier Brian Gallant will join his counterparts from across the country in Alberta this week for meetings of the Council of the Federation.

“The main focus for New Brunswick during these meetings will be the Canadian economy and jobs,” said Gallant.

The council comprises all 13 provincial and territorial premiers. Their meetings are being held July 18-19 in Edmonton.

The premiers are expected to discuss jobs and economic growth, Canada-United States relations, trade, infrastructure, legalization of cannabis, and criminal justice.

“We clearly need to discuss trade. We will discuss how we as provinces can best contribute to a positive resolution of the North American Free Trade Agreement modernization for the Canadian economy,” said Gallant. “I will also want us to discuss how we can work together to develop and expand our export markets as a country.”

Prior to those meetings, the premiers will hold discussions with national indigenous leaders on topics including indigenous children in care and the socio-economic action plan for aboriginal women.
