OROMOCTO (CNB) – The provincial government released today its new Regional Service Delivery model, which includes the establishment of 12 regional service commissions by January 2013. The model is part of the Action Plan for a New Local Governance System in New Brunswick.
“The creation of 12 commissions will increase collaboration, communication and planning among communities,” said Local Government Minister Bruce Fitch. “The commissions will be responsible for the delivery of mandated and voluntary services, and they will be accountable to the communities they serve.”
The model includes:
● boundaries for the 12 regional service commissions;
● the role of the commissions;
● a governance model; and
● descriptions of the five mandated services.
Legislation and regulations will be brought forward to create the commissions. Accountability mechanisms will be included, as well as board composition and voting procedures.
“A first step in the transition process is to describe the Regional Services Commission model as much as possible, while recognizing that some details will only be available through the legislative process,” said Fitch. “The commissions will play an important role in service delivery and planning for our communities. Most importantly, they will support connectivity and co-operation among communities to help build and sustain stronger regions.”
The model and the action plan are available on the Department of Local Government website.
